cruise ship Vishakapatnam - Port Blair

The port at Vizag, in Andhra Pradesh, is a land-locked port and one of India's largest. It also has the oldest shipyard on the eastern coast of the country. It is linked to the sea by a channel cut through solid rock and sand. It holds a large share of cargo and exports handled.

History dates the use of this port to the trade with ancient Rome, Arabia and Burma. At one time, it was operated by the British East India Company. After the first World War, the British Admiralty planned to construct a harbour at Visakhapatnam at the mouth of the Meghadrigedda River. The Port was formally inaugurated by His Excellency Lord Willingdon, the then Viceroy and Governor General of India on 19 December 1933.

Even though the eastern coast of India is often battered by cyclones, this land-locked harbour is safe from them. Also, a high promontory into the sea, Dolphin's Nose Hill, keeps its safe. It is located to the north of the entrance channel.

This major port of India has 24 berths and annual throughput of 65 million tones. Since 2001, the inner harbour has been extended and a multi-purpose berth commissioned there. Widening of the entrance channel has also been done.

Vizag is connected to other parts of the country via roads, railways and airways. It is only seven hours from the state capital of Hyderabad.
