scuba diving - Andaman nicobar Islands

The best way to enjoy underwater life is to go Scuba diving. Beginners as well as experienced divers can find a lot of places to dive. Different colours and varieties of corals can be seen here. Most of the dive sites are open till night. There are some dive sites that are best explored at night.

Some agencies will take you to ship wreck sites, too. There must just be a treasure waiting for you there! Many locals and foreigners love to just laze around near the beaches and, when night hits, they plunge down into the sea. The best season for diving is from December to April.

To dive near islands surrounded by fringing reefs, often several hundred meters wide and separated from the shore by a lagoon is worth the deal. Volcanic mountains and underwater ridges make it a trying experience for even an expert diver. There are many steep slopes and shallow reefs suitable for snorkeling. You can see varieties of sharks and rays on a dive.

Some of the favourite dive sites near South Andaman Island and Port Blair are: Cinque Island, with its clear waters and a visibility of up to 80ft, is good for deep dives. North Point at Cinque Island is filled with sponges and corals. Southeast Reef at Cinque Island is a nice place for beginners.

Bala Reef, on the west of Little Andaman, is a five-sq.km area rich in colourful corals. Fish Rock near Passage Island has perky cliffs and drop-offs. It is home to sharks, Eagle rays, large coral groupers, turtles, batfish, parrotfish, surgeonfish, Triggerfish and tuna.

Rutland Island, being shallow, is a great place for a smooth dive. There is a ship wreck site, too, nearby. Corruption Rock is located between Chidiya tapu and Rutland Island. It is made up of big underwater boulders, channels, ridges, canyons and corals. Snake Island, off Corbyn’s Cove beach, is another adventurous site.

About 50km from Port Blair, by inter-island ferry, will get you to Havelock Island. Here are some of the best unexplored dive sites in the world. Mac Point, off the Havelock Island, has good visibility. Aquarium is a fringing reef site. Turtle Bay is good for short, low dives. Barracuda City is home to many fishes and corals. The presence of hard corals might make diving difficult here, at times.

Lighthouse is a huge dive site, suitable for any kind of dives. A great favourite here is a night dive. The Wall is a huge submerged rock. It drops about 55m and is superb place for an adventurous dive.

Campbell Shoal, off North Button Island, is a hard coral area. You can spot White tip Reef Sharks, large cod and groupers, Coral Trout, Blue and Golden-banded fusilers, Giant Trevally and many species of reef-fish. Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, in Wandoor, has about 50 types of corals.
