The two dock systems at Kolkata and Haldia make up the Kolkata Port. The Haldia dock system is a deep water dock, 122km from Kolkata. Even though it's far from the sea, there are many milestones to the port: it has the largest dry dock facilities in India and the most modern Vessel Traffic Management System in India. The differential Global Positioning System which was introduced will aid in make ing hydrographic surveys more precise.

The Haldia Dock Complex has 15 berths, oil terminals, three oil jetties in the Hooghly river, barges and anchorages. The cargo handling machinery, lifts and department at Kolkata and Haldia are top of the notch. The virtual jetty a kilometre from Saugor Island was commissioned to handle deep draft vessels. This all-weather jetty works through the year.


Kolkata Port is connected to the rest of the cities of India via road and rail links. National waterways via the Ganga and Brahmaputra Rivers also connect the port to other parts of the area, especially the Sunderbans.
