About Andaman nicobar Islands
This string of islands is located to the east of India, in the Bay of Bengal. It is a Union Territory and its administrative headquarters is Port Blair. This beautiful port is situated on the South Andaman Island. The famed Cellular Jail is located here. The Veer Sawarkar Airport is the gateway to the islands here.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to the east of mainland India, is a series of volcanic peaks, coral reefs and beautiful islands. According to myths, the name 'Andaman' is said to be derived from 'Hanuman', who was known to the Malays as Handuman. The first settlement by the British took place in 1789, which was later abandoned in 1796. The current population, besides the natives, is descended from British and Muslim settlers, some criminal tribes from Central and United Provinces, refugees from erstwhile East Pakistan, Burma and Sri Lanka as well as ex-servicemen. You can find people from faiths such as Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and Sikhs. Languages such as English, Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, and Nicobari are spoken here.
The tribes on Andaman islands are the Great Andamanese, Onges, Jarawas, and Sentinatese, all of Negrito origin. The tribes of Nicobars are of Mongoloid stock - Nicobarese and Shompens. The indigenous peoples of the Nicobars (unrelated to the Andamanese) have a similarly isolated and lengthy association with the islands. There are two main groups: the Nicobarese, or Nicobari, living throughout many of the islands; and the Shompen, restricted to the interior of Great Nicobar.
Paddy is the main food crop. It is mostly cultivated in Andaman group of islands, whereas coconut and areca nut are the cash crops of Nicobar group of islands. The best time to visit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is between October and May. Cotton is the best material to be worn here, it's comfortable and light.
The Andaman Wood Pigeon is the state bird. It is endemic to the islands. It has a longer tail than the usual pigeons. It lies in evergreen forests. The state animal is the dugong, also called the sea cow. This sea animal is also seen in the Gulf of Kutch, Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay. Andaman Padauk is the state tree. It is used to make a lot of artifacts and furniture.
The white sandy beaches, blue waters, and coral reefs with lot of marine life including dolphins, turtles and fish are a great way to spend your evenings. It’s an ideal location for scuba diving.
